Synopsis: “First mom,” she suddenly whispered, her bottom lip trembling, barely able to utter any words let alone form a sentence, “And now...”

“Buffy? Dawn? Anybody home?”

Xander’s eyes darted to and fro, quickly scanning the living room as he closed the door behind him with a small thud. He noticed the window was open half-way letting a gentle breeze whistle through to the room, which meant one of the two Summers sisters was home. It was when a couple of drivers started to honk their cars rambunctiously loud, the noise filtering through the crack, that he ambled over there to shut it quickly.

He saw her standing on the balcony, semi-leaning over the railing as she was staring in front of her idly. Without any hesitation he joined her, as he slid next to her she averted her gaze to him, her eyes clouded over with unwept tears.

“First mom,” she suddenly whispered, her bottom lip trembling, barely able to utter any words let alone form a sentence, “And now...”

It was then that he caught a brown-leathered book tugged between her arms and he didn’t even need to ask what was bothering her.

No one had expected him to die.

Rupert Giles. Ripper. A brilliant watcher; valiant fighter. And even if it was never mentioned, her beloved substitute father.

His death alone must be tough on her, he figured, but to have witnessed him being killed by the hands of her ex-lover...

Unbearable.

Softly he grabbed the watcher’s diary away from her, dropping it on the low windowsill and then wrapped his arms around her slender body, holding her into a tight embrace. The wind picked up, blowing bitterly cold against them and he felt her shivering, so he pulled her closer while stroking her back soothingly. The first of Buffy’s sobs broke out as she buried her face into Xander’s coat, drenching it with tears.

“I still can’t believe he’s gone, Xand,” she murmured against the woollen fabric, “It’s my fault. I should have seen it coming. I should have prevented it. I’m the Slayer and I couldn’t save him. I should have—,”

“Shh,” he interrupted, shifting his eyes towards the dark horizon, not even noticing how little drops of rain switched into black sheets of rain lashing against the concrete, drowning them completely. “I’m here for you,” he just said, slowly began to rock her back and forth, then moving his feet along the rhythm of the pouring rain, as though they were the notes of someone's song up in the dark grey sky and as though this music was specially reserved solely for them.

He didn’t even acknowledge Dawn coming home, regarding them from a distance with a frown tugging on her lips.

All he felt was her moving with him.
